Political Update – July 2024
New Labour Government
On 4 July, Labour secured a substantial majority across the UK and 59 of the 75 seats in London. WCC councillors Tim Roca and Jess Toale were elected as MPs for Macclesfield and Bournemouth West respectively but still remain as Councillors. By elections are expected in due course.
Last week’s King’s Speech featured bills on planning, crime and policing, English devolution and employment rights and we will engage with consultations once published and with other key policy changes that impact the West End.
Key Public Affairs Activity
- HOLBA engaged with WCC and BusinessLDN on sustainable transport issues. A potential lobbying ask was identified on the proposed withdrawal of the congestion charge exemption for electric vans next year.
- TfL have responded to us with regards to next steps on pedicab regulation and licensing
- Briefings were attended with Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor Business and Growth and political journalist Tim Shipman
- An e-shot requesting signatures for a new letter to Rachel Reeves about reversal of the shopping tax was sent to members
- Deputy CEO Mark Williams gave evidence to the London Assembly Economy, Culture and Skills Committee on London’s night-time economy (written evidence will also be submitted)
Looking Ahead
- A programme of engagement will be developed with new Ministers
- We will engage with WCC and GLA to discuss a Special Area Designation for the HOL area
- We will engage with the MET, GLA and WCC about convening a new strategic crime taskforce
If you have any questions or if you would like to discuss any of the above in further detail, please contact Antonia Stratford, Head of Public Affairs, at antonia@holba.london.
