Heart of London is doing this by:
- Championing a sustainable transport infrastructure for London and promoting active travel and low carbon transport choices
- Securing investment into the improvement and greening of the public realm
- Working with our partners, including Westminster City Council’s Climate Emergency and Smarter Cities team, the Mayor of London and service providers, to ensure that we meet net zero carbon targets across our service delivery areas
- Reducing emissions by identifying and implementing carbon reduction activities, including advocating for investment in retrofitting the area’s buildings, promoting green leases and delivering the West End freight reduction strategy.
Ways in which we are helping members reach their own targets:
- A placeshaping strategy with 35 sustainable streets and public realm projects to encourage more cycling and walking to and in the west End
- Investing in the concept design and raising private sector funding for priority sustainable transport and public realm schemes on Charing Cross Road, St. Martin’s Lane, Piccadilly and Sackville Street
- Introducing sustainable urban drainage and trees for climate change adaptation and mitigation as a part of the priority public realm schemes
- Delivered a West End cycle parking programme of 250 new cycle parking spaces
- Running a preferred supplier scheme for waste and recycling
- Trialling waste and recycling compactors at a large mix used building on Leicester Square, which achieved reduction in vehicle trips and 77% level of recycling
- Rolling out the recycling compactor project to use by neighbouring businesses a second mixed used site on Piccadilly
- Developing a new Arts Quarter, on five inter-linked streets in the West End, which will include the creation of waste and delivery micro-consolidation, with on foot zero emission delivery service to the area
- Offering free waste and recycling audits and freight servicing and delivery plans for businesses
- Promoting and supporting site for the agnostic locker service Deliver London
- Promoting Green Leases for a collaborative approach to reducing energy use in buildings
- Lobbying government for tax incentives and investment to retrofit the area’s historic iconic buildings
- Promoting food waste reduction initiatives such as the ‘toogoodtogo’ app
- Delivering the Mayor of London’s Business Climate Challenge to reduce emissions from buildings to list of bullets.
