St Martin’s Lane selected as part of the Mayor’s Summer Streets pilot scheme
We’re delighted that St Martin’s Lane will be taking part in the Mayor of London’s new Summer Streets initiative – boosting al fresco dining across the capital.
Following a submission supported by Heart of London Business Alliance (HOLBA) and Westminster City Council (WCC), the pilot – funded by the Greater London Authority (GLA) – builds on the success of previous pandemic-era schemes, temporarily reimagining the street as a more welcoming space for outdoor dining and street activity. It also presents a timely opportunity to support hospitality businesses, attract visitors, and re-energise the West End.
The scheme has been designed as a test phase to inform a permanent public realm improvement project – something HOLBA, the Council, and local businesses are already collaborating to deliver.
What will the pilot involve?
- Running from late August to October 2025, with potential for longer-term impact
- Managed vehicle access daily between 11am–11pm, with taxis and accessible drop-offs unaffected
- Deliveries and servicing to take place outside these hours
Ros Morgan, Chief Executive, Heart of London Business Alliance:
“We’re thrilled that St Martin’s Lane has been selected for the Mayor’s Summer Streets pilot. In a challenging trading environment, this initiative offers a vital opportunity to support the Experience Economy and attract more visitors to the West End. We know the value alfresco dining can bring – not just to trade, but to the vibrancy and character of a place – and we’re proud to be part of a scheme that could help set the direction for the future of central London.”
HOLBA will continue to work closely with WCC and local businesses to coordinate logistics, support licensing applications, and ensure this pilot benefits both St Martin’s Lane and the wider district.
This is an exciting opportunity to explore how alfresco dining can not only boost trade, but also enhance the unique character of our streets – providing insights that will help shape future improvements across the area.
