Charing Cross Road by Heart of London

Our Aim

Charing Cross Road, a major carriageway in the West End, is world-renowned for its specialist and independent bookshops and antiquarian retailers. In the adjacent St Martin’s and Cecil Court, independent cafés, restaurants, antique, print, and art shops can be discovered. Today, however, Charing Cross Road has one of central London’s poorest air quality records and has consequently been designated by the Mayor of London as an Air Quality Focus Area.

We propose substantial improvements to Charing Cross Road to make it safer, cleaner, more inclusive, and more easily accessible for everyone.

Improving Air Quality and Livability

Charing Cross Road is home to over 150 residences, many of which are affected by poor air quality. Traffic management measures, improved loading bays, reduced bus journey times by up to 16%, and the creation of a tree-lined boulevard will all contribute to a significant improvement in air quality, creating a healthier and more pleasant environment for residents and visitors alike.

The Placeshaping Strategy

The plans outlined in the Placeshaping Strategy include a tree-lined boulevard with widened footways, additional pedestrian crossings, an all-green phase diagonal crossing, safer routes for cyclists, and a new public space between the National Portrait Gallery. These measures are expected to result in an estimated 20% reduction in collisions. This vital upgrade comes at a crucial time, as the opening of the Elizabeth line will bring an additional 170,000 commuters through Tottenham Court Road every day.

The benefits of the scheme will include:

  • A new public space and garden
  • More space for pedestrian, as well as al fresco dining
  • Safer routes and junctions for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Better bus journey times
  • Improved air quality
  • More trees and greening
